Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups masa harina
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water or broth
  • 1012 corn husks (soaked)
  • 2 cups filling (shredded chicken, pork, cheese, or vegetables)
  • Spices (cumin, chili powder to taste)
  • Sour cream or salsa for serving

Instructions

  1. Soak corn husks in warm water for at least 30 minutes to soften.
  2. In a large bowl, mix masa harina with baking powder and salt. Gradually add water or broth until the dough is smooth.
  3. Prepare your filling by mixing in spices according to your preference.
  4. Spread about 2 tablespoons of masa dough onto each corn husk. Place a spoonful of filling in the center and fold the husk over like a gift.
  5. Stand tamales upright in a steamer basket over boiling water. Cover and steam for 1 to 1.5 hours until masa pulls away from the husk easily.
  6. Let cool slightly before unwrapping and serve with sour cream or salsa.
